MBA Entrance Exam Syllabus 2026: CAT, XAT, MAT, CMAT & OPENMAT Complete Guide

CAT (Common Admission Test) is the gold standard — accepted by all 20 IIMs and 1,000+ B-schools.

Marking: +3 for correct, -1 for wrong (MCQs only). Non-MCQ (TITA) questions have no negative marking.

Difficulty level: CAT is the hardest MBA entrance — the VARC section expects college-level English reading speed, DILR questions are genuinely tricky, and Quant covers advanced topics like permutations and coordinate geometry.

XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur and accepted by 160+ B-schools.

What makes XAT unique: The Decision Making section is unlike any other exam. You are given real-world business or ethical scenarios and must choose the "most appropriate" course of action. There is often no clearly right answer — it tests judgment, not knowledge.

Essay: XAT also has a 200-word essay (no longer scored but used during interview evaluation).

MAT (Management Aptitude Test) is the easiest major MBA entrance exam — accepted by 600+ B-schools.

Marking: +1 for correct, -0.25 for wrong. No TITA questions.

MAT is conducted 4 times a year (Feb, May, Sept, Dec) in both online and offline modes. A 600+ composite score (out of 800) is considered excellent and gets you into colleges like Christ University, BIMTECH, and Alliance University.

CMAT (Common Management Admission Test) is conducted by NTA and accepted by AICTE-approved B-schools.

What makes CMAT unique: The Innovation & Entrepreneurship section is CMAT-specific. It tests knowledge of startup ecosystem, design thinking, and entrepreneurial concepts. Questions are factual and can be prepared by reading business magazines.

CMAT is ideal for students targeting colleges like GIM Goa, KJ Somaiya, IFMR, and Welingkar.

OPENMAT is IGNOU's entrance exam specifically for MBA admission:

Duration: 3 hours. All questions are MCQs. The cutoff typically falls around 110-120 marks. OPENMAT is significantly easier than CAT — a student who struggles with CAT Quant can comfortably score well here.

Frequency: Conducted twice a year (February and August). Results come in 4-6 weeks.

Strategy: Most serious MBA aspirants take CAT as their primary exam and XAT/CMAT as backups. If you are targeting NMIMS specifically, take NMAT. If budget is the constraint, take OPENMAT for IGNOU admission.

Quantitative Aptitude (common to all exams):

• Focus areas: Arithmetic (40-50% of questions), Algebra (20-25%), Number Theory, Geometry

Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning:

• CAT DILR: The most unpredictable section — practice puzzles from previous year papers
• For other exams: Standard bar charts, pie charts, tables — formulaic and predictable

General Awareness (XAT, CMAT, MAT):

• Read daily current affairs for 3 months before the exam
• Focus: Awards, government schemes, budget highlights, sports, international events

Use this decision framework:

• Targeting IIMs, FMS, MDI, SPJIMR? → CAT is mandatory. No alternative.
• Targeting XLRI? → Take both CAT and XAT. XLRI also accepts CAT scores but XAT is preferred.
• Targeting NMIMS? → Take NMAT. CAT score is not accepted by NMIMS.
• Need a safety net? → Take MAT and CMAT alongside CAT. These open 600+ college options.
• Budget MBA from IGNOU? → Take OPENMAT only. Easiest exam, lowest cost.
• Cannot decide? → Take CAT + MAT + CMAT. CAT preparation automatically covers the syllabus for all three. Total exam fees: under ₹7,000.

Our recommendation: Prepare for CAT — it is the hardest, so your preparation will automatically cover all other exams. Then register for 2-3 additional exams as safety options. The marginal effort is minimal and the additional college options are valuable.
