The Examination Process at IGNOU

01

Term-End Examination (TEE)

IGNOU conducts Term-End Examinations in June and December each year at designated exam centres across India. Students must register for TEE separately and can appear for a maximum of 8 courses per session. The exam schedule is published on the IGNOU website well in advance. IGNOU passing marks are typically 35% for most undergraduate courses and 40% for postgraduate courses.

02

Assignments (TMA)

Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs) form a crucial component of the assessment. Students must submit assignments before the prescribed deadlines to become eligible for Term-End Examinations. Assignments carry 30% weightage in the final grade for most programs and are evaluated by academic counsellors at study centres.

03

Practical Examinations

Programs with practical components require students to attend practical sessions at designated study centres. Practical examinations include laboratory work, project viva, teaching practice (for B.Ed), and field work submissions. Practicals carry separate credit and grading.

04

Grading System

IGNOU uses a 5-point grading scale: A (Excellent, 80%+), B (Very Good, 60-79%), C (Good, 50-59%), D (Satisfactory, 40-49% for PG / 35-49% for UG), and E (Unsatisfactory/Fail). Students who fail can reappear in subsequent TEE sessions without re-enrollment.

05

Exam Centres and Hall Ticket

IGNOU allots exam centres based on the student's regional centre jurisdiction. Hall tickets are generated online through the student portal approximately 2-3 weeks before examinations. Students must carry a valid photo ID along with the hall ticket to the examination centre.

Rankings & Recognitions

Association of Indian Universities (WES)
NATIONAL ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION COUNCIL (NAAC A ++)

IGNOU's credentials are backed by a robust framework of statutory recognitions, quality certifications, and international affiliations that collectively position it as one of the most credible open universities in the world.

University Grants Commission (UGC) Establishment

IGNOU was established by an Act of Parliament — the Indira Gandhi National Open University Act, 1985 — and falls directly under the purview of the UGC. Being a UGC-recognised central university means that IGNOU's degrees carry the same legal validity as those from any central university. Employers including UPSC and state public service commissions accept IGNOU qualifications as equivalent to those from conventional universities. Graduates can use IGNOU degrees for NET/SET examinations, higher studies abroad, and professional certifications.

NAAC A++ Accreditation — The Gold Standard

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has awarded IGNOU the coveted A++ grade, the highest possible rating in India's accreditation system. This grade was awarded after rigorous peer-team evaluation of IGNOU's curricular aspects, teaching-learning processes, research output, infrastructure, student support services, governance, and institutional values. An A++ rating signals that IGNOU maintains world-class academic standards despite serving millions of students across dispersed geographies.

Distance Education Bureau (DEB) Recognition

The Distance Education Bureau (DEB), a statutory body of the UGC, specifically regulates open and distance learning institutions in India. IGNOU's programmes are approved by DEB, complying with the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020. DEB recognition is particularly important for professional programmes like MBA, BCA, B.Ed, and BBA.

International Memberships

IGNOU is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU), International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE), and has partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL). These memberships facilitate academic collaborations, faculty exchanges, and degree recognition internationally. IGNOU degrees are evaluated favorably by World Education Services (WES) for immigration and employment in countries like Canada, USA, and Australia.

AICTE Recognition

For technical programmes like B.Tech and MCA, IGNOU has received appropriate approvals from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), ensuring these degrees are accepted in the technical and engineering sectors.

Parliamentary Standing

Unlike private universities that require UGC recognition separately, IGNOU derives its authority directly from the IGNOU Act, 1985 passed by the Indian Parliament. This provides the strongest possible legal foundation for the university's degree-granting authority and ensures its permanence irrespective of regulatory policy changes that may affect other institutions.

IGNOU University

IGNOU degrees are issued by a Central University established by Act of Parliament and carry full recognition across India and internationally. The degree certificate is accepted for government employment, higher education, and professional licensing without any distinction from conventional university degrees.
