CLAT 2026: Exam Date, Syllabus, Pattern, Eligibility & Preparation Strategy

Key change since 2020: CLAT moved from a knowledge-based pattern to a comprehension-based pattern. Every question is now based on a passage — you read a 300–400 word passage and answer 4–5 questions based on it. This means you don’t need to memorise thousands of facts; you need strong reading comprehension and analytical skills.

Where to focus: Current Affairs + Legal Reasoning together make up ~50% of the paper. Students who read newspapers daily for 6 months have a massive advantage. Legal Reasoning doesn’t require knowing actual laws — the passage gives you the legal principle, and you apply it to the given facts. It’s more like logical reasoning with a legal flavour.

Quantitative Techniques is the easiest section. It’s Class 10-level maths — percentages, ratios, averages, basic graphs. If you can solve NCERT Class 10 maths, you can score 10+ out of 13 easily. Don’t waste time on advanced maths.

Important: Keep checking the official Consortium of NLUs website for exact dates. CLAT dates have shifted multiple times in recent years. Registration fees are approximately ₹4,000 (General) and ₹3,500 (SC/ST/BPL).

Reality check: Getting into the top 5 NLUs requires scoring 95+ out of 120 — that’s an 80% accuracy rate with negative marking. This is achievable with 8–12 months of focused preparation. For lower-ranked NLUs, 70–80 marks is usually sufficient, which is more accessible.

Total NLU seats across all 24 universities: approximately 4,000–4,500. With 70,000+ applicants, the overall acceptance rate is about 6%. But the acceptance rate for top 5 NLUs is under 1.5% — making it more competitive than many IITs.

Can you crack CLAT without coaching? Absolutely. Many CLAT toppers are self-study students. The exam tests comprehension and reasoning, not coached tricks. Self-study + daily newspaper + mock tests is genuinely sufficient. Save your coaching money and invest it in a good mock test series instead.

Smart strategy: Prepare for CLAT as your primary target. Since AILET and LSAT have significant overlap, attempt all three with minimal extra preparation.
