What is JEE Main 2026?

JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination Main) is conducted by NTA twice a year (Session 1 in January, Session 2 in April) for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. It also serves as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced (IIT admission). Approximately 12 lakh students appear annually.

How JEE Main Percentile is Calculated by NTA

NTA uses a normalization method to ensure fair comparison across multiple shifts and sessions. JEE Main is held across 2 sessions (January + April), each with multiple days and shifts.

NTA Percentile Formula:

Percentile = (Candidates scoring ≤ your NTA score ÷ Total candidates in session) × 100

Your best NTA score across both sessions is used for the final merit list. NTA releases the Combined Result after Session 2, which is used by JoSAA for seat allotment in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.

How is JEE Main percentile calculated by NTA?
NTA calculates JEE Main percentile using the formula: Percentile = (Candidates scoring equal to or less than your score ÷ Total candidates in the session) × 100. Since JEE Main is held in multiple shifts, raw scores are first normalized across shifts using the percentile equivalence method. Your best percentile across both sessions is your final JEE Main percentile.
What percentile is needed for IIT through JEE Advanced?
To qualify for JEE Advanced 2026, General category students need approximately 97.5+ percentile (top 2.5 lakh rank). OBC-NCL requires ~95th percentile, SC requires ~90th percentile, and ST requires ~87th percentile. EWS follows General category cutoff. The exact cutoff is announced by NTA after JEE Main Session 2.
What is the minimum percentile for NIT admission?
The minimum JEE Main percentile for NIT eligibility is approximately 93.5 percentile (General), 85 percentile (OBC), 72 percentile (SC), and 60 percentile (ST). However, for popular branches like CS at top NITs, you need 98.5+ percentile. Home state quota seats have lower cutoffs than All-India quota seats.
Should I appear in both JEE Main sessions?
Yes, appearing in both sessions is recommended. Your best percentile from either session is counted. Session 1 (January) gives you an early benchmark. If you score 99+ in Session 1, you can focus on JEE Advanced prep. If you need improvement, Session 2 (April) gives you another chance. There's no penalty for appearing in both sessions.
What is the difference between JEE Main rank and percentile?
Percentile represents your relative performance (what % of students scored equal to or below you). Rank is the actual position in the merit list. With ~12 lakh candidates: 99.9 percentile ≈ rank 1,200. 99th percentile ≈ rank 12,000. 97.5th percentile ≈ rank 30,000. The formula is: Rank ≈ (1 - Percentile/100) × Total Candidates.
